Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines Wiki
Zygaena - beast

A hengeyōkai (変化妖怪) is a Changing Breed refered in Vampire: The Masquerade simply as a shapeshifting demon.[1] The one portrayed in Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, Zygaena, transforms into a bipedal hammerhead shark. He is the target of demon-hunter Yukie, who seeks to avenge her master who had died by his hand. The fledgling may offer to help kill him.

Trivia[]

  • Hengeyōkai appears in Japanese folklore.
  • While referred to as a demon in-game, Hengeyōkai are not demons but one of many shapeshifting beings known as Fera in the World of Darkness as well as the Garou, commonly known as werewolves.
  • Hengeyōkai specifically refers to the Fera of Eastern Asia, each of which (save the Kitsune) are specific sects of Fera that exist elsewhere in the world. The hengeyōkai featured in Bloodlines is may be a Same-Bito of the Rokea race.
  • The mainline weresharks traditionally hate and view humans as disgusting, and would hunt down any of their kind descended from mankind as such they are always descended from actual sharks rather than humans. They view their Eastern brethren as heretics simply for walking on land and particularly for living among mankind, among other reasons. Zygaena is possibly a traitor to his kind from the East, which are ironically seen as traitors to their kind throughout the rest of the world. However, hengeyōkai may be used erroneously given this understanding, and this wereshark is among the few Rokea to walk on land, and only referred to as such as it would be the only word Yukie knows to refer to the Fera races
